Cheap Car Insurance in California: Reddit's Advice, Ranked by Real Dollar Impact
Reddit is genuinely good at cheap-insurance tips - r/personalfinance and r/Insurance recycle the same list every month. What the threads never do is rank the list. Some moves save hundreds a month, some save pennies, and a couple are overrated. We quote California drivers all day; here's the list ranked by what actually moves the number.
The big levers (do these first)
1. Shop it through more than one carrier - impact: HIGH. The same California driver routinely gets numbers hundreds of dollars a month apart from different carriers, because each carrier prices toward the business it wants that quarter. One quote is not a market check. This is the single biggest lever on the list and the reason brokers exist.
2. Fix your liability limits to your actual life - impact: HIGH. "Full coverage" means nothing specific. The gap between state-minimum 30/60/15 and 100/300 limits, and where your deductibles sit, changes the premium more than almost anything else you control. Reddit's "just get minimums" advice is fine for a $2,000 car and terrible if you have anything to protect.
3. Report your real mileage - impact: HIGH for commuter-turned-remote. Miles driven is a top-three rating factor in California by law (Prop 103). If you stopped commuting and your policy still says 15,000 miles a year, you are paying for a commute you don't drive.
The medium moves
4. Raise the deductible - impact: MEDIUM. Going from a $500 to a $1,000 deductible cuts the premium, but only makes sense if you can actually absorb the $1,000. Reddit loves this one slightly more than it deserves.
5. Ask about low-mileage and usage-based programs - impact: MEDIUM. Real discounts if you genuinely drive little; a tracking app that watches you brake is the price.
What Reddit overrates
"Move to a cheaper zip code." California's rating rules make territory matter less here than in almost any other state. Your record, miles, and experience must carry more weight by law. Nobody should move for car insurance.
"Loyalty discounts." Staying put is not a savings strategy in California. Re-shopping at renewal is.
