California SR-22 questions, answered
What is an SR-22 in California?
An SR-22 is not insurance. It is a certificate your insurance company files with the California DMV to prove you carry at least the state-minimum liability coverage. California’s minimum liability is 30/60/15: $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 property damage.
How long do you need an SR-22 in California?
Most California SR-22 requirements last three years. The clock runs from the date the DMV sets, usually your reinstatement date, and any lapse in coverage can reset it. Keep the policy active and paid for the full term.
What happens if my SR-22 lapses?
If your coverage cancels, the insurer files an SR-26 with the DMV. That notice can trigger a license suspension and often restarts the three-year SR-22 clock. Avoiding a lapse is the single most important thing during the SR-22 period.
Can I get an SR-22 without owning a car?
Yes. A non-owner SR-22 policy provides liability coverage when you drive a car you do not own and satisfies the DMV filing requirement. It is generally cheaper than an owner SR-22 because there is no specific vehicle on the policy.
Does QuoteMoto file the SR-22 for me?
No. This guide is educational. QuoteMoto does not file SR-22 certificates, does not pull your driving record, and does not represent you before the California DMV. Your insurance company files the SR-22 when you buy a qualifying policy.
