Before choosing your policy
California Car Insurance Quote Checklist: Compare Equal Coverage
QuoteMoto editorial team · Reviewed: October 7, 2026
To compare California car insurance quotes fairly, give each insurer the same driver, vehicle, garaging address, mileage and coverage information. Then compare the total policy cost, liability limits, deductibles, exclusions and effective date in writing. A smaller monthly payment can reflect less coverage or a different payment schedule.
Prepare one set of information for every quote
Use your current declarations page as the starting point, then correct anything that has changed. The declarations page summarizes the insured people and vehicles, coverage limits, deductibles and policy dates. It is a comparison reference, not a substitute for reading the policy.
Decide which people will drive the car, where it is normally kept, how it is used and how many miles it is driven. If a household driver, rideshare use or business use matters, tell every insurer the same facts rather than leaving one quote with incomplete information.
- Driver names and license details, including accidents or violations requested by the insurer.
- Vehicle year, make, model and VIN; financing or leasing requirements, if any.
- Actual garaging address and annual mileage.
- The same requested coverages, limits and deductibles on every quote.
Match coverage before comparing the price
California’s standard minimum liability amounts are $30,000 for injury or death to one person, $60,000 for more than one person and $15,000 for property damage. Meeting that minimum does not mean a quote includes collision, comprehensive or protection for every loss. Review your needs and any lender requirements with the insurer.
Compare uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, medical payments, rental reimbursement and other options as separate line items. A quote that removes an option should be compared with other quotes that remove the same option.
- Liability: match the per-person, per-accident and property-damage limits.
- Collision and comprehensive: match both the coverage and each deductible.
- Additional coverage: record whether each requested option is included, declined or unavailable.
- Restrictions: ask about excluded drivers and uses that the policy does not cover.
Compare the full policy cost and payment schedule
Ask for the premium over the same policy term. A six-month premium cannot be compared directly with a twelve-month premium, and the amount due today is not necessarily the full cost. Keep the written quote and ask which amounts may change after the insurer verifies your information.
The California Department of Insurance’s premium survey can help you understand differences between insurers, but its surveyed figures are not personalized quotes. Use actual offers for your own profile when deciding.
- Record the policy term, total premium, initial payment and remaining payments.
- Ask which installment, broker or other fees apply and whether they are included in the stated total.
- Confirm which discounts have been applied and what documentation is required.
- If an SR-22 is needed, confirm filing availability and any separate filing fee.
Check the insurer and effective date before switching
Use the California Department of Insurance’s license-status resources to check the insurer and the agent or broker. Keep the insurer’s contact details, the written coverage selection and the policy documents together so you can resolve a mismatch.
Before ending the old policy, confirm when the replacement policy starts and which drivers and vehicles it covers. If you have an SR-22 requirement, also confirm the new filing and your DMV status. A quote request by itself does not activate coverage.
- Ask the insurer to explain any material difference between the quote and the final policy.
- Confirm the start date and time of replacement coverage.
- Keep proof of coverage and confirmation of any required SR-22 filing.
- Review policy and payment documents before authorizing cancellation of existing coverage.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cheapest monthly payment always the cheapest policy?
No. Compare the full premium for the same policy term, any applicable fees and the payment schedule. Also match coverage limits and deductibles before deciding.
Does a California premium-survey result count as a quote?
No. The Department of Insurance says its survey results are not premium quotes. An insurer must evaluate your own driver, vehicle and coverage information.
Does requesting a quote start my insurance?
No. Confirm binding, the effective date and the final coverage with the insurer or agent. Keep your existing coverage in force until the replacement is confirmed.
